Check Points and Chances
Bear Preference Points
Hunters receive a preference point each year that they apply for a bear license
and are unsuccessful in the drawing. Applicants may apply for a harvest tag or apply
for a "Preference Point Only", banking the point for future drawings. A person who
is successful in the bear drawing will see their accumulated preference points reset
to zero. This includes successful applicants who do not purchase their license.
Hunters who fail to apply or are ineligible to apply for a bear license for three
consecutive years will lose their accumulated points.
Elk Weighted Lottery Chances
Hunters receive one additional chance in future drawings each year that they apply
for an elk license and are unsuccessful in the drawing. Hunters have the option to
purchase a “Chance Only” when applying. “Chance Only” applications are excluded from
the license drawing for the current year but will be counted as an additional chance
for future years. When an applicant is successful in a drawing, their accumulated chances return to zero.
Hunters who fail to apply or are ineligible to apply for an elk license for three
consecutive years will lose their accumulated chances. Only eligible Michigan
residents may apply for an elk hunting license.

Points and chances are tracked based on ID. If applicants use a different ID to apply than was
used in previous years (driver license vs. DNR Sportcard) or use an incorrect ID, their
previous points and/or chances will not be considered in the drawing. If there is a change in ID,
applicants must call 517-284-WILD (9453) to ensure that their points and/or chances are combined under their
current ID. It is the hunter's responsibility to check application receipts for accuracy.
